Chapter 15 - Telemachus Returns



Summary: Athene goes to find Telemachus to remind him that he must return home because the suitors are going to win his mothers hand in marriage. She also warns him that people are going to try and ambush him on his way home so he has to be careful. On his way home he stops so the swineherd can tell Penelope that Telemachus is safe. The next day, he tells Menelaus and Helen that he is returning home and they give him gifts. When he is leaving, a eagle flies over him with a goose in its talons and they think it means that Odysseus is returning home and is going to seek revenge on the suitors. Once at Pylos, when the ship is about to leave, Theoclymenus asks if he can come on their ship and Telemachus welcomes him.


Odysseus says that he wants to leave Eurmaeus' hut, hoping that Eurmaeus will say that he can stay longer, which he does. Odysseus and the swineherd trade stories. The next morning, Telemachus gets to Ithica. He leaves and leaves the crew goes to the city on the ship. The crew sees a hawk carrying a dove in its talons, which is interpreted as a sign of strength for Odysseus.
